YOU DON’T NEED AN ARMY
You Don’t Need An Army
Then Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; it may be that the Lord will work for us. For nothing restrains the Lord from saving by many or by few. — 1 Samuel 14:6
One yes to God outweighs a thousand no’s around you.” — PG
Israel was not in a moment of strength. They were in retreat. Everything had begun to unravel. Saul panicked under pressure. The people scattered. The army shrank. What once looked strong now looked exposed and fragile.
The Philistines had overwhelming force. Thousands of chariots. Thousands of horsemen. Soldiers beyond counting. Israel, on the other hand, had almost nothing. No weapons. No blacksmiths. Only two swords remained in the entire nation.
And the people were hiding. Living in caves. Blending in with the enemy just to survive. Some had already quit. Others were simply trying to make it through the moment without being noticed. It feels ancient, but it sounds like today.
We live in a culture where consensus has become the compass. If enough people agree, we assume it must be right. But God has never needed a majority to move. He has always been looking for someone willing to move with Him.
In the middle of fear and compromise, Jonathan speaks a dangerous kind of faith. “It may be that the Lord will work for us.” Not certainty. Not clarity. Not a guarantee. Just enough faith to move.
That maybe carried more power than an army because faith is not built on guarantees. It is built on God’s ability. Jonathan made a decision most people avoid. He would rather risk everything moving toward God than stay safe sitting still without Him.
“Faith never knows where it is being led, but it loves and knows the One who is leading.” — Oswald Chambers
Stop waiting on backup. Heaven is waiting on your obedience. Jonathan did not go alone. He had an armorbearer. One voice that refused to talk him out of what God was leading him into. That kind of agreement is rare. You do not need a crowd. You need the right voice.
If you are not careful, you will surround yourself with people who normalize fear and explain away faith. They will help you stay where you are instead of stepping into where God is calling you. Not everyone can handle your maybe. That is why Jonathan did not tell Saul. Some people carry titles but do not carry faith.
Before Jonathan saw victory, he faced a climb. Scripture says he went up on his hands and knees. There was nothing impressive about it. It was slow, exposed, exhausting work. Climbing always is.
You climb toward what God is calling you into, but you also climb out of what has been holding you back. Fear. Insecurity. Old patterns. Hidden struggles. While you are climbing, the enemy will speak. You do not belong here. You are not ready. You are not qualified. But God decides where you belong.
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. What you need is not ease. What you need is proximity.
Jonathan did not move randomly. He waited for a word. He set a condition that required God to speak. “If they say, come up to us, then we will go.” He was not waiting for more people. He was not waiting for better conditions. He was waiting for a word from God. Because one word from God will do what an army never could.
“God is not looking for strength. He is looking for surrender, because surrender invites His power.” — Charles Spurgeon
When the word came, they moved. Two men stepped forward, and everything shifted. The enemy fell into confusion. Fear spread through their camp. They began to turn on themselves. What should have required thousands was accomplished through obedience. When His presence shows up, your enemy starts fighting itself. This was never about numbers. It was about His presence and someone willing to obey.
And then something powerful happened. The people who had been hiding came out. They did not move when Saul spoke. They did not move when strategy improved. They moved when they saw victory. Your obedience will give other people courage.
There are people watching your life right now, wondering if faith actually works. When you step out and God shows up, it will not just change your life. It will pull others out of hiding. Victory does not attract crowds. It creates them.
You do not need an army. You do not need majority approval. You do not need perfect conditions. You need a maybe kind of faith, the right voice beside you, the courage to climb, the discipline to wait for His word, and the obedience that invites His presence. Because when His presence comes, everything changes.
And you will win battles you never had the numbers to fight, because you never needed an army. You needed Him.

My Prayer:
Holy Spirit, I come to You in the name of Jesus, and You ask you to build a faith in me that moves even when I do not have full clarity. Teach me to trust Your voice over popular opinion and Your presence over numbers. Give me the courage to climb, the wisdom to wait for Your word, and the boldness to obey when You speak. Let my life be a testimony that I never needed an army, I only needed You.
Amen.
May the Lord, the God of your ancestors, increase you a thousand times and bless you as He has promised. — Deuteronomy 1:11
