FEARLESS FIGHTS
Fearless Fights
Now therefore, proclaim in the hearing of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and afraid, let him turn and depart at once from Mount Gilead.’ ” And twenty-two thousand of the people returned, and ten thousand remained. — Judges 7:3
“Fear doesn’t have to destroy you to defeat you. It only has to convince you to walk away.” — PG
There is a difference between showing up and standing up. A difference between being present and being prepared. Life eventually reveals which one we are. A contender. A pretender. Or a quitter.
When God called Gideon, He did not find a fearless warrior. He found a farmer hiding in a winepress. Gideon saw weakness. God saw valor. Gideon saw his upbringing. God saw his assignment. Gideon saw excuses. God saw potential.
Before God could use Gideon to conquer the enemy around him, He had to help him contend with the enemy within him. Fear. Insecurity. Doubt. Self limitation. You will never conquer the enemy against you until you contend with the enemy within you. That is why God spent all of Judges 6 changing Gideon’s perspective before changing his circumstances. God was preparing the man before He delivered the victory.
“Courage is fear that has said its prayers.” — Dorothy Bernard
By the time we reach Judges 7, thirty two thousand men have assembled for battle. The army is gathered. The moment has arrived. Then God makes a shocking announcement. “Whoever is fearful and afraid, let him turn and depart.” Twenty two thousand men leave. Not because they were injured. Not because they lacked ability. Not because they were disqualified. They were afraid. The greatest reduction in Gideon’s army was not caused by the enemy. It was caused by fear.
How many dreams have been abandoned because of fear? How many callings delayed because of fear? How many people settled for less because fear convinced them safety was better than obedience?
Fear does not just make people run from battles. Fear makes people walk away from purpose.
“Everything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear.” — George Addair
The good news is that fear does not have to win. God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. Fear may speak loudly, but it does not have authority unless we surrender to it. A fearless fighter is not someone who never feels fear. A fearless fighter is someone who refuses to let fear make the decision.
Today, God is still looking for contenders. Men and women who will stay when it gets difficult. Who will trust Him when the odds look impossible. Who will keep moving forward when fear says turn back. You may feel outnumbered. Overwhelmed. Unqualified. But if God is for you, who can be against you? The same God who transformed a fearful farmer into a mighty warrior is able to transform you. You are stronger than your fear because He is greater than your fight.
Live This Out Loud:
1. Turn On: “Fear Go” by Mercy Culture and proceed through the rest of this blog.
2. Identify one fear that has been holding you back and confront it with God’s Word.
3. Stop rehearsing excuses and start repeating God’s promises.
4. Refuse to make decisions based on fear this week.
5. Remember that obedience does not require certainty. It requires trust.
6. Ask God to show you where He is calling you to contend instead of retreat.
My Prayer:
Holy Spirit, I come to You in the name of Jesus.
Thank You that You have not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. Help me recognize every place where fear has been influencing my decisions and replace it with confidence in Your promises. Give me the courage to contend for everything You have called me to be. Teach me to trust You when the odds seem impossible and remind me that if You are for me, nothing can stand against me. Make me a fearless fighter who refuses to walk away from purpose.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
May the Lord, the God of your ancestors, increase you a thousand times and bless you as He has promised. — Deuteronomy 1:11
